answered by Jonathan Crawford G2G6 Pilot ( 179k points) Keeping sources and maintaining those is a lot of work, I think right now as the "result" of our research is a great use case and I would not vote to compromise that for ease of citations, which can be learned. There may be other sites that do similar. While using Ancestry you can use the Ancestry Citer app to assist, or copy/paste from Familysearch, Werelate and FindAGrave records directly (not exactly Evidence Explained format but easy and much better than nothing). The choice to utilize the Evidence Explained format as a goal is a way to assist in this longterm vision, because doing so supplies any researcher with enough information to find and recreate the data. In addition, while templates and free space pages are useful while the site exists, they are not part of the longterm preservation as they are not included in the gedcom export process. Keeping sources in a separate location in the database would defeat that aim by creating an additional layer to maintain and preserve. The architecture of the site uses mediawiki, modified somewhat, but the idea is to not continue to modify it, to allow for ease of development, longevity and obscelesence planning. Instructions are here. (You probably already use this, but I'm including it just in case others reading this may not be aware of it.) answered by Nelda Spires G2G6 Pilot ( 447k points)

You still have to key in the details of the source, but it does speed things up some.Īs for repeated uses of the same source on a page, once you get accustomed to to mark when an inline source you intend to use again on the same profile, it only takes seconds to do. I know there are online citation builders and templates-Googles "chicago manual of style citation generator" and the Citation Machine comes up. They might pipe up here and show you how they've done it. Others here on WikiTree have set up Free-Space pages with their frequently used sources and link these to their profiles. (I'm pretty sure Mac would have something similar to Word so you could do the same.) Then I basically just copy-paste my template and "fill-in-the-blank" with the specifics each time I use it. One thing I do is create templates for sources I use repeatedly and save them in Word documents. I use FamilyTreeMaker and I am able, if I want, to copy citations from it to paste elsewhere. Can you copy the citations you created from Mac Family Tree to paste to WikiTree? Might be worth figuring out if that is a possibility. I have not used the Ancestry Citer app, but you might check it out.īut, I'm thinking you might be on a Mac since you mentioned using Mac Family Tree and there are, unfortunately, no apps for Macs that I know of to help you with creating citations. It is fantastic! It automatically builds citations from Ancestry and FamilySearch. I know of one possible help for you if you, hopefully, use a browser that works with extensions (like Chrome)-the app called WikiTree Sourcer. What do other people think? How can we solve the sourcing problem on Wikitree?Ī WikiTree solution for this would be wonderful, but, in the meantime, here are some suggestions. Sources should have their own pages similar to free space profiles and pictures. There is no reason that we should not be able to do something similar on Wikitree. Their citations have their own page and once they are created they can be reused multiple times quickly. On the citation page you can see what info is being cited to that source which allows for corrections if mistakes are made. I use Mac Family tree as well as Wikitree and the difference is night and day. It slows down research and in many cases leads to people adding the bare minimum of sources or not adding them at all because of confusion on how to do it properly. Frequently I find myself with a document and It can take me 10 minutes just to figure out the proper formatting for the citation.

Wikitree also needs some sort of widget or something to create a source in the first place. Sources should be able to be reused easily so that multiple pieces of information on the same page can be sourced quickly when the information is all coming from the same source. Right now it is extremely difficult to do correctly and even as an experienced Wikitree user I find it difficult to source correctly. Souring on Wikitree needs to be made easier.
